
Sumner is a small picturesque seaside village, 20 Minutes from Central Christchurch. A pedestrian Esplanade skirts the beach and the suburb has a variety of cafes, restaurants, art & craft shops, a museum, cinema, bookshop, library, chemist and supermarket.
Sumner village is at the seaward end of a small valley, part of Banks Peninsula- itself of ancient volcanic origin.
Paraglider clubs use the thermals from the surrounding hills & cliffs & then land on the beach. Walking & mountain bike tracks traverse the nearby cliffs and hills. Board sailing and surfing are also well catered for.
A gondola nearby in Heathcote valley, transports passengers to a class restaurant with spectacular views of the city, Southern Alps, the Kaikoura mountains, and Lyttelton harbour.
From the Christchurch airport, Taxis, shuttles and buses all connect with the Central City & suburbs.
City buses connect Sumner with the city every few minutes during peak hours. At the City Central Bus Exchange a number 3 bus provides a direct route to Sumner and stops directly opposite Le Petit Hotel.
Sumner provides an idea base for local site seeing. The historic French settlement of Akaroa is an easy 80 mins. scenic drive away. Kaikoura can be reached in 2 hours and in less time, Arthurs Pass in the Alps can be reached.
